Bed & breakfast hotels
Bed and breakfast hotels (usually referred to as B&Bs) are small lodgings that provide breakfast and overnight accommodation only. They are thought of as the oldest form of hotel accommodation dating back to humanity’s earliest civilizations when they existed in such forms as monastery food and shelter for travelers.
The typical B&B is a private home with less than 10 bedrooms available for visitors. Note however that not all B&Bs operate from a home. This has spawned the use of the term ‘homestay’ to refer to B&Bs running from a private home and ‘inns’ for substantially larger establishments.
Initially, a B&B guest was expected to share the bathroom with the host family or other guests. However, as competition has increased, guests increasingly expect (sometimes even demand) their own exclusive bathroom (i.e. the ensuite concept).
Given the personalized nature of B&Bs, no two B&Bs are the same even when they are located on the same street. Interestingly, it is this uniqueness that sees visitors return to a specific B&B despite the availability of other cheaper, decent alternatives in the vicinity. B&B owners and staff form a personal connection with guests that creates a strong bond that can last for many years.
