Algeciras , city (1990 pop. 102,079), Cádiz prov., South Spain, in Andalusia, on the Bay of Algeciras opposite Gibraltar and La Linea de la Concepcion. A Mediterranean seaport, it is the main Spanish ferry terminal to North Africa. Fishing and tourism are also important. It was the first Spanish town taken (711) by the Moors. In the naval engagements of July, 1801, near Algeciras, the British defeated the French and Spanish fleets. The city of Algeciras is placed in the south end of the Iberian peninsula, to 36rd 8'de latitude N and 5th 27 ' of length O, and to the border of a closed bay that is opened for the waters of the Strait of Gibraltar.
Ecological value, scenery and cinematic.

Of marked seaworthy tradition, the place in the bay of numerous industries prevents the entire use of his 23 Km. of beaches for tourist use, although it possesses some of great interest like the Rinconcillo, San García and Getares.

Algeciras, today a modern city, has the port, one of the most important of Spain, as important economic centre. As for interesting monuments there are the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma and the Capilla de Nuestra señora de Europa.

History

It was " Portus Albus " in times of Rome; his ovens of ceramics in " The Rinconcillo " testify his existence in the Ist century of our age. Then it disappeared to be reborn with name I reside, the same one that it preserves: "Al-Yazirat Al-Jadra" (La Isla Verde), Algeciras, since today we it declare. Tarik put foot in these grounds in the spring of 711; Byzantine count Don Julián, the exark of Ceuta, was his first governor. Then it arose walled in the Old Town, there there got up the citadel and the beautiful mosque that Ben Jalid was constructing.

Towers and well castellated walls defended the city, to which time later the " New Town " was added in the XIIIth century by order of Yusuf.

Almanzor was born here in 939, the great captain of the Arabic army, who would take the Moslem border up to the Pyrenees and would win in fifty battles continued, without losing even one battle. And there were born also writers and poets who gave reputation to the city.

Alfonso XI placed La Plaza in 1.342, and, after twenty months of hard siege, entered winning in Algeciras on March 28 of 1.344, which it was a Palm Sunday. In memory of this religious festivity, the King ordered to dedicate the mosque of Santa Maria de la Palma. Later the Pope Clemente VI grants a bulla, ordering that this church should be had as cathedral and that of Cadiz moves to her.

The kings of Spain on her part, connoisseurs of the importance of this conquest, join his name to the crown, being entitled since then, and already forever, " Kings of Algeciras ".

Algeciras is already in power of the Christians. This should have been the beginning of his nobility under the flags of Castile; but it did not happen, nevertheless, this way.

Passed twenty-five years, again the Moors led by Mohamed V of Granada, knowing dismantled the city, and in countermeasure for the murder of Don Pedro I, his ally and friend, attack and gain the square algecireña in 1.369, and, a few years later, thinking that might not retain it in his power, inflame it, devastate it, do not leave stone on stone and then they leave her.

This way the enclosure of that was the most important " Plaza of Andalusia ", in words of Guichot, turned out to be suddenly turned into a heap of smoking ruins. This happened in 1.379.

His inhabitants fled towards other cities; the catedral came back to Cadiz, and here scarcely stayed any houses, refuge of humble fishermen... Only some rests of turrets and walls were a testimony of his past nobility.

Conquered later Gibraltar in 1.462, by Don Alonso de Arcos, prison guard of Tarifa, Enrique IV, reigning of that time, granted diverse privileges to stimulate the repopulation of that square; one of these was the delivery to Gibraltar of the terms of Algeciras, for his share-out between the new inhabitants of the Rock. And this way our city transformed his ruins into numerous gardens and farmhouses.

The time passes... In front of the remains of Algeciras, Gibraltar lives through his placid existence... Nobody suspects that that gigantic stone is going to be separated violently from our geography, filling with pain the heart of the Spanish. On August 4 of 1.704, as consequence of the war of succession, the anglo-Dutch square attacks Gibraltar, with such a fury, that the square has to yield itself to archduke Carlos, claimant to the crown of Spain; but only a few hours later the ensign of the archduke is lowered, and in his place the English bander rears up. Gibraltar stays for Queen Ann from England.

The Spanish leave, they don´t want to live under the foreign might, and leaving goods and property, they distributed to these fields....
The biggest nucleus of these Gibraltarian loyalists, shelter close to San Roque's chapel, where later the city would be born. Another group is established in an oratory, which later would give place to the population of Los Barrios, and another small group went to the fields of ancient Algeciras, placing themselfs half-close to a chapel property of the Gálvez family - the current chapel of Ntra. Sra. De Europa - what today is known as the Plaza Alta, giving place to the resurgence of the historical city.
From this moment on, Algeciras will not break his continuity, across the years; but it will have to beat big obstacles.
Initially Algeciras was depending from San Roque, and it has to free a hard suit to become emancipated. In 1.755 his first town hall is granted to Algeciras. In 1.723 he constructs his biggest church that is dedicated to Santa María de la Palma, since Alfonso XI conquered it from the Moors; in 1.748 he raises the Civil Hospital to attend the " poor and helpless ". And in 1.777 he constructs the aqueduct of " Los Arcos".
Algeciras begun his new life, his destination of a great city of the bay don´t admit discussion.

Later will come her famous Fair, authorized in 1.850; the International Conference about Morocco that gave the city reputation of hospitablity and education in 1.906. And later, the great decisive step of his future: the port begun in 1.913.

From this moment, Algeciras progresses an intensive march; his future is glimpsed happy, and the beauty of his picture, confirms once again the by-name of " the City of the Beautiful Bay ".
