Alicante's past is that of any other corner of the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by the Greeks who named it Akra Leuke (White Peak), it was later captured by the Romans who renamed it Lucentum (City of Light). In the second half of the eighth century it was conquered by the Moors, and the city was finally retaken in 1246 for the Castillian crown. In 1308 it was incorporated in to the Kingdom of Valencia.

Today Alicante is the second largest city in the Valencian Country, and receives millions of visitors through its airport and its harbour each year. With its long sandy beaches, mild and pleasant climate, vibrant festivals, recently renovated old town and lively night life, this is definitely a city to spend some time in.

ALICANTE ON STAGE
This is an exhibition of amateur theatre from the city of Alicante, first held in 1988 after Alicante won the Micalet 97 Award for Performing Arts awarded by the Government of Valencia. As a preliminary selection stage, an Amateur Theatre Projects competition is held in the first quarter of the year, in which a jury selects those acts that will subsequently be performed in the exhibition, which is accompanied by a programme of parallel activities, such as workshops, exhibitions, talks, bibliographical background to theatre works, etc.

INTERNATIONAL PUPPET FESTIVAL
This festival was first held in 1984 and, by reason of its being one of the most prestigious in Spain, acquired an international category four years later. The shows are suitable for both children and adults, and during the period of the festival there are also other parallel activities related to the world of puppets, such as practical workshops, exhibitions, conferences and publications, with the events taking place indoors and in open-air venues all over the city. Each of its editions has brought together, from different countries, including from across the ocean, over two hundred groups who have demonstrated the entire range of techniques involved in this performing art.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF MEDIEVAL AND BAROQUE MUSIC
In 1966, to commemorate 700 years since the capture of Alicante by King Jaime II - an event that meant the definitive annexation of the town to the Kingdom of Valencia - a medieval music festival was organised, among other events. This was such a round success that it was organised again for 2000 with the idea of repeating it annually. Important international and national figures from the world of medieval and baroque music participate, with chamber orchestras, choirs, quartets, etc, offering performances in the churches of the city.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC
This is one of Spain's most prestigious festivals for contemporary music in good taste, and the composers and musicians who participate are of a high international standard. The festival, which started in 1985, is by now a well-established event in Alicante's cultural calendar. Some of its concerts are celebrated in the open air.

INTERNATIONAL Festival; MUSIC, THEATRE AND DANCE
The International Festival of Music, Theatre and Dance are a unique festival in which a huge number and variety of performances converge on Alicante. These performances take place during the months of July and August, in the open air and against the spectacular backdrop that is the promenade by the old port, next to the Marina of Alicante and Postiguet Beach.

MEDIEVAL MARKET
If, after taking Alicante in 1296, King Jaime II permitted the celebration of an annual fair and market, then 700 years later a medieval market organised to commemorate this event proved so popular with the public that its annual repetition is ensured. And thus, at the end of July, once the Hogueras de San Juan festivities are over, to visit the squares and lanes of the Old Quarter behind the Town Hall is to take a step back in time. The streets fill with stands selling crafts and there are displays of traditional trades such as ironwork, pottery and glassmaking. Musicians, dancers, jugglers and falconers can be found on every corner and all those participating wear the clothes typical of the Middle Ages.

SPANISH THEATRE EXHIBITION BY CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS
Since 1993 and for an entire week, various professional theatre groups and companies from all over Spain perform vanguard works, frequently for the first time, with performances hosted in various parts of the city.

CASTLE NIGHTS
In the Patio de Armas (the castle square) and against the exceptional backdrop of the Castle, charming suppers followed by first-class musical performances and then dancing into the night, take place on Fridays, Saturdays, and the eves of bank holidays. The 'Castle Nights' setting is further enhanced by the magnificent sculptures of the CAPA collection that decorate the different areas of the fortress.

MUSIC EVENINGS
During the summer weekend nights, classical music filters through the streets of the Old Quarter interpreted by the senior pupils from the Superior and Professional Conservatories of Music that carry the name of the brilliant composer from Alicante, Oscar Esplá. The backdrop provided by the ancient Plaza de la Ermita in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood could hardly be more suitable, with its traditional setting and the magnificent panoramic views it offers of the Castle and the city.

SUMMER OF CULTURE
A city as attractive to visitors as Alicante programmes, for the summer months, a multitude of activities and cultural and leisure events for all those who come here on holidays. Of particular note is the International Music, Dance and Theatre Festival which takes place against the spectacular backdrop of the Plaza del Puerto Viejo, next to the sea and the new leisure area that is the Levant Quay.
During the months of July and August top internationally known acts come to Alicante, among them singers, bands, orchestras, theatre companies, opera and zarzuela (Spanish light opera) companies. The city is also host to a jazz festival. And in honour of a patron saint of the city, the Virgen del Remedio, there is a traditional alborada (literally, dawn song) on the 3rd of August with a symphonic and choral concert, followed two days later by a street procession on the patron's feast day.

BEACHES

PLAYA DE LA ALBUFERETA
This beach takes its name from the small inland lagoon (Albufera) that once existed here, with a natural port around which the Iberian-Roman city of Lucentum once flourished the origin of today's Alicante. There is now a Sports Marina here located in a cove sheltered from the tides and storms.

PLAYA DE LA ALAMDRABA
This beautiful beach offers a magnificent panoramic view of the bay of Alicante. Nest to it, up to the lighthouse on Cabo huertas, there are numerous rocky or sandy coves, among which are the nudist coves Cala Cantalares and Cala Palmera.

PLAYA DEL POSTIGUET
This is the beach right in front of the town, next to the sports marina and bordered by the palm-flanked promenade. On the last stretch, next to la Marina trenet train station, the ancient Cocó beach, where fishing boats once used to come ashore, has now been recovered for leisure purposes.

PLAYA DE SAN JUAN
This is one of the finest beaches in Europe because of its 7 km on fine golden sand. Beautifully clean and equipped with a full range of facilities.It is the centre point of the San Juan tourist area, with numerous hotels, restaurants, sports areas and good nightlife.

PLAYA DE TABARCA
This is located on the island of Tabarca, the only inhabited island in the Valencia Region. The entire island is now a Mediterranean Marine Reserve because of its protected plant and animal species, and it's the ideal site for diving or snorkelling.

PLAYA DEL SALADAR - URBANOTA
Also called Aguamarga. This beach has a broad sandy stretch from which you command a fine panoramic view of Alicante from the south.
