Bilbao´s gastronomic culture lies at the heart of the city's customs. The city hosts a large number of top quality restaurants offering the best of Basque culinary art. Abundant raw materials have favoured Bilbao's cuisine, which has made a name for itself the world over.
Passion for food is reflected in one of the most popular Basque customs called the Txikite or Poteo. While you drink a txikito, which stands for small glass of wine, or zurito, denominator for a small glass of beer, at cerrtain times of the day you can see a lot of city dwellers going from one bar to another, where they have their pintxo, appetizers made up of various ingredients. You will find dishes ranging from the simplest and most traditional "pintxos" to the most sophisticated and imaginative food delights. A traditional "pintxo" contest in which bars and restaurants take part is held in Bilbao every year.
Gastronomic culture is also mirrored in some of the most popular festivities in the city as is Saint Thomas Day, celebrated every 21 December, when traditional products from "baserris" hamlets are exhibited and everyone can buy or taste delicious dishes in a joyful atmosphere. Tasting "talo con chorizo" corn tortilla and salami and "txakoli", sweet regional white wine, is a must.
Bilbao abounds in holidays dear to its inhabitants, among which Begoña Virgin's Day, the day of Vizcaya's patron virgin, known as the "Amatxu", is one of the most popular. On 11 October, as well as on 15 August, people go on a pilgrimage to the Basílica de Begoña, one of the greatest Bilbao symbols. Some of the many religious traditions of the city can also be appreciated in the Holy Week procession..
Bilbao's Fiesta is celebrated in August, and culinary art pervades the Fiesta's events. The inhabitants and visitors in Bilbao take to the streets in a celebration that lasts nine days and nine nights. But the streets are not the only witness the revelry, which also invades different locations and premises. The fireworks that throw light over the city during the nine nights of the celebration attract Bilbao's dwellers, as do the concerts and plays shown throughout the Semana Grande (Great Week).
The city is also proud of its popular symbols, one of which is its football team -Bilbao Athletic. Football is a real passion, and the strong affection for "los leones" (the lions) can be felt everywhere round. San Mamés, the Athletic's stadium, also called "La Catedral" (The Cathedral), is another main symbol of the city.
THINGS TO SEE
PUENTE DE BIZCAIA
This transporter bridge, designed by architect Alberto de Palacio, was opened in 1893 and is a contemporary of the Eiffel Tower, to which it bears a great resemblance.
Alberto de Palacio was also the developer and the person who conceived the idea for the project (1888), which availed of the technical know-how of Fernando Arnodín, a pupil of Eiffel's, for its completion after three years of works and numerous difficulties.
63 metres high and 160 metres wide, it is considered the most outstanding construction in Spain of the Industrial Age, as it was the first mechanical transporter bridge to be built in the world.
The Bizkaia Bridge is the oldest of its kind in the world. The other bridges still in operation are located in Europe and America. There are three in Great Britain, two in Germany, one in France and one in Argentina.
It has been chosen as the only candidate within the State for it to be declared World Industrial Heritage Monument by UNESCO.
OLD TOWN PORTUGALETE
The Aristocratic Town of Portugalete competed with Bilbao, in the 14th century, for the control of the sea trade up the estuary. Its old quarter today is reminiscent of its trading past and its factious wars. "The big city", as it was described by the pilgrim bishop, the martyr of Azerdjan, was an obligatory stopping-point on the coastal Route of St. James. Its small alleys, Koskojales or the hill of Santamaría, take you to two of its glorious monuments: the Salazar tower and the Basilica of St. Mary.
The Salazar tower, of mediaeval origin, has been turned into a culture and exhibition centre and a restaurant. These are the latest functions of a Tower which was the main defence of the Town in the period of the nobility. The Salazar family ruled this territory at a time when battles between factions were the norm. A superb refurbishment of the Tower reveals secrets of former times.
A few metres further up and sheltered by the Salazar Tower is the magnificent Basilica of St. Mary. Its Renaissance altarpiece, the work of Guiot de Beaugrant, lights up a temple of unsurpassable beauty. This group of buildings is joined by the Town Hall, built in 1884, predominantly of Neoclassical and the Baroque style, the Bandstand and the Monument to Víctor Chavarri, an outstanding personality in Basque politics and economy at the end of the 19th century.
GETXO PROMENADE AND MARINA
Starting at the Bizkaia Bridge and running along the right bank of the Estuary is an impressive promednade, stretching for several kilometres, where architecture, scenery and leisure blend in a masterful fashion.
The architectural beauty of palatial homes and mansions of differing European styles that were built in the 19th and 20th centuries, in the stretch of land between the riverside area of Areeta-Las Arenas, Neguri and the Old Port of Algorta, including the Ereaga heights, have been declared "Monumental District in the Listed Cultural Asset category". Of particular note are the Lezama-Legizamón Mansion, Cisco House, Eguzki Alde Mansion, Itxas Begi Mansion, San Joseren Villa, and Mara Reparadora.
Before you reach Ereaga Strand you will see Getxo's Marina, Euskadi's first leisure harbour. It is land that has been reclaimed from the sea and provides shelter for yachts and strollers alike, where the main players are good cooking and leisure activities.
It is one of the contemporary ports for the mooring of yachts and sailing boats that has been built in recent years on the Basque coast. It offers weekend trips to get to know the Biscayan and Basque coastline, which is as beautiful as it is wild. Together with the sailing boats, the restaurants and leisure activities making up the complex guarantee a particularly intense visit.
ABRA-AQUARIUM
Located in the Getxo Marina, the Abra-Aquarium is a unique opportunity to discover the sea's secrets, a surprisingly beautiful and diverse world. 24 tanks of water house meadows of multicolour seaweed, schools of silvery fish, the bed of the Abra harbour, delicate reefs with corals in fanciful shapes, mysterious sea horses and their legends...
A fascinating trip into the secrets held by the sea is offered by this aquarium, which aims at showing and teaching all those visiting the Marina about this wonderful world.
OLD PORT OF ALGORTA
At the end of the walk which we started at the Bizkaia Bridge and having passed the Ereaga strand, is the Getxo Tourist Information Office, acting as an anteroom to the Old Port. A former fishing port, its inhabitants were well known as expert lemanes or harbour pilots who guided the boats through the sand bar that would form at the entrance to the estuary and lead them up the Nervion. They were likewise famous for other more altruistic work, such as helping to rescue the victims of the many shipwrecks that occurred in the bay.
Nowadays, in this picturesque spot, the Old Port, with its narrow, steep streets, visitors can savour the delicacies of local cuisine which specialises in fish and shellfish. The Church of St. Nicholas of Bari (1845-1863, remodelled in 1925), a building in the late Neoclassical style and one of the most interesting in the whole of Bizkaia, is located on the higher part of the town.
GALEA
The coastal scenery here starts to take on its characteristic look. The municipality of Getxo, so radiant in the vicinity of the Bizkaia Bridge, is untameable on the sea side, with two architectural jewels overlooking the cliffs. On the one hand, the Aixerrota windmill, the only one of its kind still standing in Getxo. It was built between 1726 and 1727, as a result of the drought affecting the Seigniory at the beginning of the 18th century. The Fortress of Galea is an interesting example of a fortification from the 18th century and the only example surviving in Bizkaia. It was designed by Jayme Sycre, and work began on it in 1742. It was built in order to defend the trading traffic heading for Bilbao. Both architectural structures were an attempt to tame Nature, which chooses to be wild and beautiful in this part of Getxo.
The great cliffs are the area's main characteristic. The long walk, which runs only a few metres from the cliff edge, affords breathtaking views and scenery. The Galea path will lead you as far as the beaches of Azkorri-Gorrondatxe, Barinatxe-La Salvaje and Sopelana, on the so-called "Wild Coast", and takes in the fortifications built during the Civil War.
MUSEUM OF THE INDUSTRY "RIALIA"
The building, known like the "House of the Sea", takes in like permanent show the historic-artistic background of the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya enterprise, the referring company of the Biscayan industrialization . RIALIA is conceived like a social museum, dedicated to the working-class around the iron. The society however, with the migratory phenomena and the labor movement, are two of the aspects that compose the first glance to it.
Nevertheless, the protagonism of the iron in the region, from the mineral extraction to its transformation into steel, and aparition of an enterprise web, supposed the greater transformation in the social scenary. The panoramic route that represents RIALIA culminates with a surprising audio-visual show, and with an iron inspired sample of art as well.
LIFT TO BIZKAIA BRIDGE CATWALK
The Bizkaia Bridge or Hanging Bridge affords the possibility to access the catwalk over the Nervion estuary.
The two lifts to the top, from Portugalete and Getxo, take you 50 metres up to an excellent lookout from which to view the Abra as well as the river estuary both upriver and where it flows into the open sea.
THE BASQUE COAST UNDER FULL SAIL
Sailing trips are on offer all year round (except in winter) from Getxo. An excursion from a different viewpoint. A trip on a sailing boat with all you need to enjoy a day or two ploughing the waters of the Bay of Biscay.
Visits to historical ports like Bermeo, dream landscapes like the cliffs of Getxo and Sopelana or the attractive Green Bay, the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve from the sea.
GETXO TAXI TOUR
A choice of two routes lasting either 20 or 90 minutes offering the chance to get to know and enjoy the municipality with the taxi driver acting as your "guide". Price: from 8 euro.
ADVENTURE
