Santander has a very interesting history. During the predominance of the Roman Empire, Santander – then called Portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium – was a major port city. It is located on the north coast of Spain between the Basque country, which lies to the east, and Asturias, to the west. Today Santander is the capital of the autonomous region of Cantabria. As an aside, Santander obtained its current name sometime after the Third Century A.D. and is named after St. Emeterio, a martyr whose head was transported to this city.
