Si el 19 de juliol de 1936, els anarquistes van obrir les portes de les presons, com a símbol de linici de la revolució, a partir de 1938 els militants més revolucionaris de la CNT-FAI acabaran reclosos a les presons i als camps de treballs que el Servei dIntel·ligència Militar (SIM) va instal·lar a Catalunya a la manera dels gulags soviètics.
